Water saving measures
Substantial savings in the water consumption of the block were attained, by
replacing all the existing 15 litre WC cisterns with new 6 litre dual flush WC
cisterns manufactured by Armitage Shanks.
In addition the existing hot and cold-water wash-hand basin taps were replaced with modern water efficient Peglar spray monoblock mixer taps.
Although individual flat-water consumption was not metered either before or after the refurbishment project the following calculation illustrates the probable water savings per annum enjoyed by a flat purely by replacing the WC cisterns
Original 15L cistern: 15 litres cistern x 30 flushes per day (average) x 365 days = 164,250 litres/year.
New installation: 6 litre cistern x 30 flushes per day (average) x 365 days = 65,700 litres/year.
Water savings: 164,250 – 65,700 = 98,550 litres/year/flat.
Financial saving per flat based upon Portsmouth Water’s metered costs = 98,550 litres x £0.50/m³ = £49.28/year.
