The main idea of the project is introduction of the solar techniques in
Polish public buildings.
In 1998, when the project started, solar installations were very rare in Poland.
During that time the solar collectors became more popular, but only for private
houses. There is still no big installation for DHW in buildings as hospitals, or
schools. Therefore all kinds of demonstration projects are very important for
the future of renewable energy in the Polish energy system.
The project was located in Rawicz a small town in the western part of Poland.
The hospital was build during the 1930ies, it has a total floor area of 1,100 m2,
it has a heating volume of 20,160 m3, and 250 beds.
The solar heating installation in Rawicz hospital is designed for preparing the
domestic hot water for local use. It interacts with existing installations of
DHW.
Prior to the project the hospital buildings were heated form the local coal
fired heat boiler. The hot water was prepared in the heat station, and stored in
containers 3,36 m3 each. Daily hot water demand is between 15 - 18 m3.
Additionally the washbasin and shower faucets were replaced by the water
efficient ones.
In the tender procedure the Viessman collectors Vitosol 100, type 2,5 w were
chosen.
The hospital authorities decided to modernise additionally all buildings:
- replacement of old, coal fired boilers with modern, gas fired,
- new heating network - pipes and radiators,
- energy efficient PVC windows,
- building thermomodernisation,
Environmental impact arises for three reasons:
- The replacement of an old coal fired boiler with modern fired by gas, with much higher efficiency,
- The reduction of energy demand for hot water, as an effect of the installation of solar collectors,
- Thermomodernisation of all buildings and reduction of energy used for heating.
Total environmental effect:
| Pollutant | Unit | Before | After | Reduction in t/year |
Reduction in % |
| SO2 | t/year | 52,81 | 0,01 | 52,80 | 99,98 |
| CO2 | t/year | 9 010,37 | 2 206,05 | 6 804,32 | 75,52 |
| Particulates | t/year | 141,14 | 0,35 | 140,79 | 99,75 |
| NOx | t/year | 12,33 | 1,86 | 10,47 | 84,95 |

| Monitoring period: | Heating season 2003 – 2004 |
| Monitoring results: | The constructions have been equipped with a monitoring
system, which allow measuring the impact and the effects of the investment.

| Comments | The biggest success from the Rawicz project is
not only the installation of solar collectors, but that the whole heating
system was modernised. Big environmental impact was the reason, that it was
possible to provide money for such a big investment, not only from the EU,
but also form local sources such as EkoFundusz, National Fund for
Environment Protection, Vojevodship Fund for Environment Protection, and own
sources. The operating costs for hot water preparation in Rawicz are about 55% lower than before the collector installation. The total costs for the central heating and hot water preparation were reduced form 135,780 PLN/year to 72,300 PLN/year, in which for hot water preparation from 33,810 PLN /year to 18,600 PLN/year. |
