The integrated heating system is somewhat complex, so in order to optimise the energy fluxes it is imperative to implement a well functioning energy management system (EMS). The EMS implemented in the Abruzzo project monitors and controls the energy streams on three levels, the apartments, the central gas heating system, and the solar system.

Each apartment is provided with a heat meter and a regulation and programming unit (Slave Unit). This measures monthly energy consumption, regulation cycles and the internal temperature. All apartments are connected to a centralised regulation system that adjust the delivery temperature of the radiators on the basis of the external temperature.

The heat meters and the Slave Units in the dwellings are connected to a Master Unit with the following functions:

• surveys delivery and return temperatures of the distribution water of the multicells furnace
• measurement of the total energy consumption by means of a central heat meter
• measurement of the natural gas consumption by means of a general meter

The solar system is also monitored. Primarily the system checks delivery and return temperatures of the solar units, but also the energy captured by each solar unit is surveyed.

Moreover the Master Unit via modem transmits the data to an administrative operative unit, a central computer in the offices of the ATER of L’Aquila, that stores and the processes the data. This provides an extensive database that enables analyses on consumption patterns and system performance.

The EMS also controls the regulation of the thermal power of the multicells furnace in order to maintain the domestic hot water delivery temperature around 70°C and the return one not lower than 50°C.
