After rehabilitation

The grain sanitation building was built in 1963 by the Ministry of Agriculture - used for disinfestations of crops, cereals, wood and other products.

Then the building was closed down in 1975 and abandoned. In 1994 the building was handed over to the Municipality of Volos.

The building was in such a state that it was difficult to imagine that it could serve any other purpose. However, the imagination of local architects and engineers transformed the building, incorporating several elements of modern bioclimatic design like:

• Photovoltaic panels
• Natural ventilation
• Daylight and sun shading
• Insulation

After the rehabilitation the building serves as Regional Energy Centre dealing with:
– improvement of energy infrastructures
– energy management and energy saving
– promotion of alternative energy sources

The rehabilitation was founded by the European Program URBAN I. The energy applications were supported by the THERMIE Program as part of project “European Green Cities”.

	Heating: For heating there is a main boiler (120,000 kW) and a spare one. The fuel used for heating is oil. We have a steady yearly consumption of 40,000 kWh since 1999. Most recent data (winter period 2004-2005): regarding heating with oil we had a consumption rate of 75.66 KWh/ m2/year.
	Electric energy: Consumption of electric energy is about 9.964 kWh with a pick during winter period November-February
	Total energy consumption: This means we have a total energy consumption rate 96.1kWh/ m2/year to cover the energy demands of the building. This is due to the fact that windows’ array helps the natural circulation of the air inside the building so that cooling, ventilation and glazing is obtained with almost no consumption of energy at all
Other Results/ archievements	A very important replication effect was the experience gained by local engineers and the very high demonstrative value of the building. The bioclimatic building with a net surface of 520 m2 and a total of 12 persons now working in it, has shown some rather good energy saving performances. During 2003-2004 the Regional Energy Centre has amongst others performed training for schoolchildren as part of developing EGCN Training Tools
