Built-in PV modules combined with insulation

The retrofit programme includes several energy-saving technologies. Firstly the insulation was improved by installing the existing windows with a PVC frame and double layer glass, and erecting polystyrene panels on the lateral facades (the facades without windows) comprised the external wall insulation. Still it is the combination between PV-modules and the insulation on the south facade that is interesting.

A 9,9 kW photovoltaic module for electricity production from solar energy has been placed on the south façade for a total surface of 95 m². The modules have been combined with new body insulation, so that the PV-modules not only generate electricity, but also function as insulation and building blocks. The installation of PV-modules thereby saves construction costs as well as running costs for electricity.

Electricity produced by the photovoltaic modules covers the electric demand of the ventilators and the staircases lighting. The local grid provides the electricity balance depending on the amounts produced by the PV-modules. The performance is quite stabile, as depicted.
