Ecological building materials

Straw insulation
Wood construction
Unfired bricks in partition walls

The most salient part of the Roskilde project is another product of the stringent ecological foundation of the small community; the use of environmentally friendly building materials in every aspect, whatever it were PVC-free cables for internal data communication or materials for insulation.

More specifically the interior walls were coated with dried clay, which is produced almost without use of energy. Also unfired bricks of clay are used. Moreover dried clay has the capability to adsorb moisture, which provide a better indoor climate. Recycled paper materials are  used for insulation mostly horisontally between floors, and in one building straw is used as wall insulation. During the construction it was a trade-off between the natural and environmentally friendly materials, which resulted in thicker walls and thereby higher construction costs, and more efficient insulators with lower construction costs.

Moreover wood was extensively used for the building structure, and ecological low emission paints were used for the coating. Both measures contribute to an improved indoor climate.
