Why use collective heating from pellets?
Wood pellets are a clean, CO2-neutral and convenient fuel, mostly produced from
sawdust and wood shavings, compressed under high pressure without glue or other
additives. Cost efficient transport is possible because of the fact that pellets
are a highly standardised and compressed fuel. Completely automatic operation of
pellets boilers are possible because of several research and development
projects.
The European Union has set itself a number of policy objectives to increase the share of renewable energy sources in heat production and it is widely recognised that biomass can play a strategic role to achieve some of the targets. In this perspective pellets has some advantages compared to other kind of biomass. The high degree of international standardisation allows for extremely low emission combustion, also in very small appliances. Wood pellets are a very convenient fuel, delivery by tank truck and automatic feeding systems make them as user friendly and time efficient as a gas or an oil heating system.
The prices of wood pellets are probably more stable compared the rising oil and gas prices. Pellets can be produced by the local wood industry (especially in the Walloon part of Belgium with lots of forests areas), thus creating extra jobs and making the region less dependent on the oil and gas producing countries.
In Belgium there are at the moment probably a few pellets heating installations (stoves) in the residential sector, especially in the Walloon part (= French speaking part) of Belgium.
In this Walloon region a financial support of 1,500 € is given to those installation complying with the European standard EN12809, provided with an automatic feeding system and using wood as a fuel.
